About HeliCoil STI Thread Plug Gauge
The accuracy of the finished thread when the HeliCoil insert is installed is dependent upon
the accuracy of the tapped hole. If the finished tapped hole gauges satisfactorily, the
installed HeliCoil insert will be within the thread tolerance. It is not necessary to gauge the
installed insert.
After the HeliCoil insert has been installed, the GO thread plug gauge may not enter freely.
However, the HeliCoil insert will always seat itself when the bolt or screw has been installed
and tightened.
Types of HeliCoil Gauges
HeliCoil Working Gauges - these gauges provide a guaranteed minimum wear allowance
on the pitch diameter of the GO members of .0002 inches.
HeliCoil Reference Gauges - reference gauges have pitch diameters on or close to
minimum (basic size). They are essentially laboratory or master gauges and should be
used in case of conflict between 2 working gauges, which can arise due to one of them
having more use and wear.
HeliCoil Complete Gauges - complete gauges consists of the GO thread plug gauge, the

HeliCoil Screw Thread Insert STI Taps
HeliCoil taps are also referred to as HeliCoil Screw Thread Insert (STI) Taps and must be used for HeliCoil repairs. HeliCoil STI Taps are supplied with HeliCoil Thread Repair Kits and may be used with the same tap handles as conventional taps.
Emhart Technologies HeliCoil STI Taps are manufactured in high speed steel to the most rigid specifications. They produce holes for Tolerance Classes 4H5H and 5H for use in the general range of aluminums, magnesiums, mild steels, free machining stainless steels, and other free machining materials.
HeliCoil also has specially designed spark plug taps, also known as Piloted Reamer Taps,
for use in spark plug applications.
HeliCoil Roughing Taps
Straight fluted HeliCoil taps used for difficult tapping operations where it is desirable to

HeliCoil Spark Plug Taps have a pilot thread at the front, to pull the tap into the hole,
followed by the reamer section which removes the damaged threads and then by a
larger tap section which cuts the proper threads for the HeliCoil spark plug insert to be
installed. No prior drilling of worn out threads is needed with HeliCoil spark plug taps.

of HeliCoil Hand Installation Tools – threaded mandrel type and the prewinder type.
The HeliCoil Prewinder Type Inserting Tool is used with HeliCoil fine pitch inserts as these inserts are proportionately larger in their free state than HeliCoil coarse pitch inserts. Emhart Technologies HeliCoil fine pitch inserts need to have their diameters reduced before they
are installed into the hole. This is accomplished by winding the HeliCoil insert through a set of threads called a prewinder, located at the front of the HeliCoil Prewinder Installation Tool.
HeliCoil coarse pitch inserts (and 2-56 and 3-48 inserts) do not require prewinding, so they can be installed using the HeliCoil Threaded Mandrel Inserting Tool. The threaded mandrel at the front of the tool engages the HeliCoil insert and provides a positive lead to guide the
HeliCoil insert into the tapped hole quickly and efficiently. With the threaded mandrel, installing a HeliCoil screw thread insert is easy and incidents of cross pitching are minimised.

About HeliCoil Pipe Thread Inserts
HeliCoil 8-Pitch Pipe Thread Inserts is a unique range of screw thread inserts specially designed for 8-pitch threaded holes. HeliCoil Pipe Thread Inserts have a sharper crested diamond-shaped cross-section than conventional HeliCoil inserts and the wire cross section of HeliCoil Pipe Thread Inserts is precisely engineered to reduce the pitch diameter of a standard 8-pitch tapped thread by exactly 1/8 so that HeliCoil assemblies can be made in normal 1/8 thread size increments.
For example, if a 1.1/4-8 thread is damaged, it can be readily repaired by tapping with the next eighth-inch larger standard 8-pitch tap - in this case, 1.3/8-8. No special taps are required.

About HeliCoil Free Running Inserts
These are the standard HeliCoil inserts when installed, provides the hole with smooth free running threads.
In their free state, HeliCoil Free Running Inserts are greater in diameter than the tapped hole into which they are installed. In the assembly operation the torque applied to the tang reduces the diameter of the leading coil and permits it to enter the tapped thread. When the torque or rotation is stopped, the coils expand with a spring-like action anchoring the insert permanently in place against the tapped hole.
No staking, locking, swaging, keying, nor interference fit is required to retain HeliCoil inserts,
thereby eliminating stress concentration in the parent material. The HeliCoil insert automatically adjusts itself, radially and axially, to any expansion or contraction of the parent material.
About HeliCoil Screw Lock Inserts
Emhart Technologies HeliCoil Screw Lock Inserts have all the characteristics of HeliCoil Free
Running Inserts but in addition, they feature a resilient locking mechanism which grips the bolt and prevents it from loosening under vibration or impact.
The locking action is achieved by one or more of the coils of the HeliCoil insert having a series of straight segments, or chords. When the bolt enters this grip coil, these chordal segments flex outward creating pressure on the bolt. This pressure is exerted between the flanks of the bolt thread thus utilising the maximum contact area and minimising the unit pressure.
HeliCoil Screw Lock Inserts permits frequent removal and reassembly of bolts without appreciable loss of torque. They positively secure the screw against loosening caused by vibration and shock and they will not relax their grip on the screw even in tough metals such as cast iron, alloy steel, titanium, etc.

These are the standard HeliCoil inserts when installed, provides the hole with smooth free running threads.
In their free state, HeliCoil Free Running Inserts are greater in diameter than the tapped hole into which they are installed. In the assembly operation the torque applied to the tang reduces the diameter of the leading coil and permits it to enter the tapped thread. When the torque or rotation is stopped, the coils expand with a spring-like action anchoring the insert permanently in place against the tapped hole.
No staking, locking, swaging, keying, nor interference fit is required to retain HeliCoil inserts,
thereby eliminating stress concentration in the parent material. The HeliCoil insert automatically adjusts itself, radially and axially, to any expansion or contraction of the parent material.
About HeliCoil Screw Lock Inserts
Emhart Technologies HeliCoil Screw Lock Inserts have all the characteristics of HeliCoil Free
Running Inserts but in addition, they feature a resilient locking mechanism which grips the bolt and prevents it from loosening under vibration or impact.
The locking action is achieved by one or more of the coils of the HeliCoil insert having a series of straight segments, or chords. When the bolt enters this grip coil, these chordal segments flex outward creating pressure on the bolt. This pressure is exerted between the flanks of the bolt thread thus utilising the maximum contact area and minimising the unit pressure.
HeliCoil Screw Lock Inserts permits frequent removal and reassembly of bolts without appreciable loss of torque. They positively secure the screw against loosening caused by vibration and shock and they will not relax their grip on the screw even in tough metals such as cast iron, alloy steel, titanium, etc.
Users enjoy cost savings in space, weight and money, through the elimination of lock wiring, lock nuts, lock washers, chemical compounds, plastic pellets/patches and other locking mechanisms.

Emhart Technologies HeliCoil screw thread inserts are helically wound, precision formed coils of extremely hard stainless steel (18-8) diamond shaped wire. When installed into a HeliCoil tapped hole, the HeliCoil insert provides permanent conventional screw threads.

About Helicoil Twinserts
Twinserts are two Helicoil wire inserts, one fitted inside the other. An Outer Helicoil insert is installed into an oversized tapped hole (which is larger than that of a usual wire thread insert tapped hole) which then, an Inner Helicoil insert is fitted inside to give a standard female thread. The Outer insert is installed into the Twin sert tapped hole and has the same nominal length as the original thread.
The outer insert is always free running while the inner insert can be free running or screw locking. Twin serts are used for the repair and recovery of tapped holes that are stripped, have widespread cracks, or are off-centre.
